Aston Villa v Man City live: score, updates and line-ups

Full time at Villa Park: Aston Villa 2-1 Man City. Jackson's quickfire double either side of Haaland's leveller proved decisive, with the second - tapped in from Mbaye's cross just two minutes after City had drawn level - the real sucker-punch. City dominated the ball and the shot count (15-8, 7 on target to 2) and went close through Gvardiol and a stoppage-time Haaland header, but couldn't find a way past a resolute Villa rearguard. A frustrating afternoon for City, who had the better of the game without the result to show for it.

City are camped in Villa's half as the clock ticks down, holding 62.7% possession and leading 12-8 on shots, but clear-cut openings have dried up - Foden's blocked effort and McAidoo's offside flag the best they've managed. Villa are soaking up the pressure and happy to take the sting out of the game with Madjo's introduction and a string of free kicks, with the deficit on fouls and cards growing as City push for a leveller in stoppage time.

City have kept pressing after that sucker-punch, and Gvardiol's gone close twice - first heading wide from Fernández's corner, then seeing a low effort saved by Suzuki. The shot count continues to tilt City's way (11-8) with six on target to Villa's two, and McAidoo has come on for Ndiaye as City search for an equaliser, but Villa's defence is holding firm for now.

Straight back down the other end and Jackson has his second - substitute Mbaye, on just a minute earlier for Alysson, squares it for the striker to roll home from close range. A sucker-punch for City, who had just levelled through Haaland, and Villa lead 2-1 against the run of play.

City get their reward! Haaland rises to meet Ndiaye's cross from close range, heading home to level things at 1-1 after a sustained spell of pressure since the restart. Villa have since had Manzambi and Cash both booked as the game gets a little feisty, while Doku continues to look lively down the left.

City continue to edge the second quarter of the half, with Doku causing problems again before seeing a shot blocked, and the corner count now 5-3 in their favour. But the closing stages have been a scrappy, stop-start affair full of free kicks, with Guéhi and Cherki both booked for fouls, and City will go in still trailing to that early Jackson strike despite their control.

City have responded well to that early setback and completely turned the game around territorially. Cherki, Ndiaye and Khusanov have all forced saves out of Suzuki, with Ndiaye also rattling the left post, while Doku's driving runs have helped City dominate possession and the shot count. Villa are creating little now beyond an early Jackson effort that drifted wide, so the pressure is firmly on them to hold out.

Nicolas Jackson pounces early, slotting home from the left of the box after City fail to clear their lines. A bright start for Villa, who've dominated possession and territory so far, while City are yet to register a shot.
